2 Peter 3:15-17 KJV
[15] ...as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
[16] As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
[17] Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
Definition of "wrest."
to usurp forcefully; to extract by guile or persistence
You can "prove" almost anything using Bible verses. So-called Bible teachers do this all the time. They deceive using Bible verses. The devil tried this on Jesus with Psalm 91:11-12 (Matthew 4:5-7).
When I was a boy, my grandfather pointed this out to me. He told me the Bible says, "There is no God." I was shocked, and he showed me this verse.
Psalm 14:1A KJV
[1] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.
He was a careful Bible teacher, and he had me learn about wresting when I was young.
There is a joke out there involving putting these two verses together.
Matthew 27:5 KJV
And [Judas]...went and hanged himself.
Luke 10:37 KJV
...Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
We must get understanding. We must know what God means by what He has written in the Bible.
Not understanding can even keep a person from getting saved. Notice.
Matthew 13:19 KJV
[19] When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Luke 8:12 KJV
Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
