“God told me” versus wisdom.

author

Updated: Dec 24, 2024

It is commonly believed that people need God to tell them what to do, specifically, apart from the Bible. For example, "Must I take this job or that job?" "Is this the person I am to marry?"

God has not promised to somehow speak to people apart from the Bible. How would anybody know it was God speaking anyway?

God's method is for His people to get wisdom. That is, how to best apply Scripture to situations and decisions. God will give them wisdom, if they ask Him for it.

James 1:5 KJV

[5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

As His children live out Scripture, day after day, they will grow in wisdom. There are details they will notice as they obey. These experiences give wisdom. They will not need God to inform them how to live each tiny detail of their lives.

An analogy. Four-year-old children must be told most everything to do in detail. But hopefully your 45-year-old child does not require this. Surely they can make most decisions on their own.

Hebrews 5:13-14 KJV

[13] For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

[14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
