What is the purpose of marriage?

author

“What if the purpose of marriage is to make you holy and not happy?”

Joel Hunter

Of course, God would have you to be happy, but only by means of holiness. Not by any other means. Holiness always causes happiness.

Genesis 2:18,21-22 KJV

[18] And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

[21] And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

[22] And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Before Adam sinned, what did he need help with? God had provided him everything he needed. What else did he need? He needed help to obey God, help to not sin, help to stay holy.

Ephesians 5:25-27 KJV

[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

[27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church. That love is to be expressed by husbands working to make their wives holy.
