Swift to hear.

author

James 1:19 KJV

[19] Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

Listening takes the focus off of you and puts it on others. What is on their minds, and what their needs and desires are. It makes you more aware of other people. Hearing others promotes selflessness vs. selfishness.

Also, you must humble yourself in order to listen to others. You must recognize they are as important as you are, or even more so.

Philippians 2:3-4 KJV

[3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

[4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

In addition, by listening carefully, you make sure you know what is really going on with the other person before you say something regrettable. It helps you to be slow to wrath.
