Praising obedience is not obedience.

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

Church people are always praising obedience to God, but almost never have lifestyles of obedience. They will obey some things, but do not have their hearts set on obeying all of God‘s commandments, all the time. They obey some of His commands when they remember, and when it is not too inconvenient. But, for the most part, they live lives of uncaring disobedience.

Francis Chan, a well-known Bible teacher, gave this analogy (or similar).

A father tells his daughter to go clean her room. She praises her father for such wisdom, etc. "How wonderful it is to have a clean room." She sings songs about cleaning rooms. She reads books about the best methods to clean rooms. She tells all her friends about her father's great parenting. But she does not clean her room.

"One step forward in obedience is worth years of study about it."

THE SHADOW OF AN AGONY by Oswald Chambers

It is actually worth more.
