Fear of God—two kinds.

author

Updated: Nov 30, 2024

There are two different uses of the word “fear.”

The fear a person feels when they are in the presence of danger is one use. For example, they step out of their car and come face to face with a huge bear. This kind of fear provokes people to flee the danger.

The other use is the fear that keeps a person away from danger. For instance, they decide not to go to Yellowstone National Park, because of the bears.

God disciplines His children.

Hebrews 12:6 KJV

[6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

If a child of God is living in disobedience, they are in danger of God‘s discipline. The fear of painful correction would motivate them to stop sinning, to flee disobedience.

On the other hand, fear of this discipline keeps people from sinning, keeps them far away from this danger.
