Benefits of overcoming evil with good.

author

Romans 12:19-21 KJV

[19] Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

[20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

[21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

  1. People see a sharp difference between the behavior of the saved and the unsaved.

  2. It causes great pain ("coals of fire on his head") to the evil person. "Vengeance" that God allows. This is pain that could lead to that person's wellbeing, rather than harm.

  3. It reflects and develops the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Jesus did good to His enemies.

  4. It promotes discipline in denying yourself (Matthew 16:24), that will help you in other areas.

  5. It helps you to be slow to wrath (James 1:19). Your thoughts go to doing good, instead of on the evil done to you.

  6. You overcome, meeting a condition for many blessings (Revelation 2-3, 21:7).

  7. It is evidence you are saved (1 John).
